#1 of Many Great Debates- Culinary Synergy and Add-Ins

Since our 4th date, Jill and I have greatly and lovingly debated, discussed and surmised the different tastes, methods and appropriateness of certain additions to our favorite dishes. We will call them "add-ins", as for most people, they are a peculiar and sometimes off-putting additions to an otherwise perfect meal. As we all have different and unique tastes, there are some add-ins which are absolutely and firmly inappropriate! So, this one has been under topic for a while....so we ask our family and friends to weigh in on this one.

#1- When serving hamburger gravy, mashed potatoes and corn in what is the perfect farm meal, is it appropriate to place tomatoes on top of the hamburger gravy?

Jill says yes.
Jeremy says...ummm, gross and yuck! The integrity of the dish is compromised...why Lord, why?

*If you don't know what hamburger gravy, mashed taters and corn have to do with each other and never heard of hamburger gravy...we are dearly sorry that you have missed out. You can rarely order it in a restaurant, so google it and enjoy making it yourself.

Home gown tomatoes on gravy is a must!!! Without the addition, it is like going to church without dressing up..

Oh, Jeremy, you must give this one another try - however, only homegrown tomatoes will do! Also, they must be used sparingly - not smothering the gravy or you get too much tomato and not enough gravy. Another key is less juice from the tomato and more fruit. Come on, give it one more try!

My girls say it is like eating a chocolate sundae and leaving off whip cream and cherr? who would even think of doing that.... James Gang

Okay--coming from a family that Grandpa Webster thought a piece of bread topped with home canned tomatoes and then sugar sprinkled on top was good, it's very hard for me to say this, but-----I think the tomatoes are great on the plate---but not on the gravy!!!!!!

Ok, hamburger gravy on mashed potatoes is just too perfect to ruin with a sliced tomato. I love tomatoes but they must be on the side. Sorry Rilinger girls. The Vickers family must disagree.

Doesn't sound good to me.

The tomato must be diced into small pieces - not a full slice! Sounds like you have plenty of tomatoes to try it with!

Does anyone else put fruit on gravy?....I think not. Oh yeah, a tomato is a fruit.

I have never made hamburger gravy, but it sounds similar to how I make sausage gravy...anyway, I love tomatoes, but I don't know that I would put them on top of gravy and mashed potatoes....Stephanie Smith

Ok, I might be inclined to try diced tomatoes used very sparingly once.

It has surprised me the number of individuals (outside the family) that agree with the tomato gravy factor. I always complement their culinary wisdom!! It seems that more and more people harbour this "secret" and think it is just "our family thing". I am amazed that some restaurant chain has not cornered the market with this one, but maybe it is too advanced for the average palate. Granted, being raised in a family that can eat tomatoes for every meal and snacks too, we may have risen to higher levels of tastebud development :). I would challenge everyone to try it once (at least one bite Jeremy). Even Natalie has tried that and likes it!!
Maybe we should get a Vicker & Rilinger "Challenge" or "Iron Chef" taste off to put this debate to rest!

By the way - You make me smile! Jenice

Tomatoes were made to be eaten with everything - juiced with beer of course! Fresh tomatoes are especially delicious on top of white gravy! Mmm!!!!
